SCORBUTIC GUM


Scorbutic gum is seen in scurvy caused due to prolonged vitamin C deficiency for at least 3 months.

“Ascorbic acid” comes from the New Latin word “scorbutus” meaning scurvy.

CLINICAL FEATURES:

l.  It is an early manifestation of vitamin C deficiency.

2. Gingiva becomes brilliant red, tender and grossly swollen.

3. Oral symptoms are like that of chronic gingivitis involving free, attached gingiva and alveolar mucosa.

4. Degeneration of collagen fibres occurs in gingiva.

5. Scurvy buds are seen on gingiva.

6. The spongy tissues are extremely hyperaemic and bleed spontaneously.

7. Ulcerated gums

TREATMENT:

Vitamin C supplements.
