TAURODONTISM (BULL-LIKE TEETH)
INTRODUCTION:
Taurodontism is a dental anomaly in which the body of the tooth is enlarged at the expense of roots.
ETIOLOGY:
l. A specialized or retrograde character
2. A primitive pattern
3. An atavistic feature
4. Mendelian recessive trait
5. A mutation
6. Associated with Klinefelter’s syndrome.
7. It is due to failure of Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath to invaginate at proper horizontal level.
TYPES:
i. Hypotaurodont (mild form)
ii. Mesotaurodont
iii. Hypertaurodont (severe form)
CLINICAL FEATURES:
l. It may affect both deciduous and permanent dentition, but more common in permanent dentition.
2. Molars are commonly affected.
3. Tooth morphology is normal.
RADIOLOGICAL FEATURES:
l. Enlarged and rectangular pulp chamber is present.
2. No constriction of pulp at cervical area.
3. Roots are very short.
4. Furcation is present just above root apex.
TREATMENT:
No treatment is required.
